Every traveler who arrives or come out of Brazil, carrying values, in cash, in national or international currency, in an amount above R$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand Reais), is required to submit the Currency Carry-On Electronic Declaration (e-DPV).


Thetraveler, coming back to Brazil, can bring goods free of taxes, since they are included in the concept of luggage and are not for commercial or industrial purpose, and respect simultaneously the overall value limits and quantitative limits.


The overall quotalimit is:

a) U$ 500.00 (five hundred US dollars), or the equivalent in another currency when the traveler enters Brazil by air or sea;

b) US$ 300.00 (three hundred US dollars), or the equivalent in another currency when the traveler enters Brazil by land, river or lake.


The quantitative limits of goods brought to the country by air or sea should apply to:


a) Alcoholic beverages: maximum 12 unities per type of beverage;

b) Cigarettes: maximum 10 packs of 20 units, each;

c) Cigars and cigarillos: maximum 25 unities;

d) Tobacco: maximum 250g;

e) Other goods unrelated to the items a) and d) (souvenirs and gifts), for less than US$ 10.00 per unit: maximum 20 unities, provided that the total quantity does not exceed 10 identical unities;

f) Goods unrelated to the items a) and e): maximum 20 unities, provided that the total quantity does not exceed 3 identical unities.


By land:

a) Alcoholic beverages: maximum 12 unities (per type of beverage);

b) Cigarettes: maximum 10 packs of 20 unities, each;

c) Cigars or Cigarillos: maximum 25 unities;

d) Tobacco: maximum 250g;

e) Goods unrelated to the items a) and d) (souvenirs and gifts), for less than US$ 5.00 per unit: maximum 20 unities, provided that the total quantity does not exceed 10 identical unities;

f) Goods unrelated to the items a) and e): maximum 10 unities, provided that the total quantity does not exceed 3 identical unities.


» Besides the quota exemptionwhich every traveler is entitled to, there are other specific tax exemptions granted to travelers. Check which one should apply to each case.


» In case of doubt, go to the Brazilian Customs and ask an officer who are responsible for goods bought abroad for information on the tax exemptions that every traveler is entitled to.


» Respect the limits and conditions that allow you to use the tax exemption schemes, or specificscheme of taxation on your luggage. Avoid having to use the common system of taxation.


» The goods subject to the payment of taxes, or those for which you want to prove the regular entry into the country, must be presented to customs supervision located at border points, seaports and airports, on arrival in Brazil.


» Pack the goods to be declared so that they are easy to access for customs inspection. This helps to speed up the clearance of your luggage.


» Make sure to arrange for sufficient medicines to meet your personal medical needs. Check with the embassy of the country you are visiting, to ensure your medicine is legal there. Obtain doctor's letter stating who the medicines are for, what they are, the dosage, and always leave medicines in their original packaging.


» Be aware that penalties for possession of drugs can result in heavy fines, imprisonment or even death penalty in some foreign countries.


» The traveler heading for any country belonging to the European Union, and who is carrying cash, or means of payment to the bearer, in an amount not less than EUR 10,000.00 (ten thousand euros) or over, should go to the country's Customs to declare those values on the specific declaration form.


» Unaccompanied baggage will receive a tax treatment, other than those applied to accompanied baggage, not entitled, for example, to the exemption quota.


» Don't carry or look after goods for other people. If you do and the goods are prohibited or restricted, you will be held responsible.


» Don’t believe you "will not be targeted". Customs officials can select a group of people and luggage for detailed inspection, for several reasons. However, those approaches should not be seen as reflections of integrity, character or body image.


» Don’t provide false or misleading information to Custom officers. Penalties for false or misleading information are severe and may result in your goods being taken from you.


» Don't bring back pirated and counterfeit goods. Copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting are illegal. The pirated and counterfeit goods imported into Brazil are subject to seizure by Customs, and its carriers can be civilly and criminally prosecuted.


» Don’t carry assets and goods for commercial purposes. If you do, you must declare them at the Accompanied Baggage Declaration (DBA) and report, before any action of customs supervision, that they will be subject to common customs clearance of import, identifying the legal entity that will promote it. Otherwise, your goods may be confiscated by Customs.


» It’s not allowed to import goods for commercial or industrial purposes by individuals.
